Creativity is believed to be one of the most important leadership traits, and more so an essential characteristic of any artist or designer. The most successful individuals in the world today are known to be some of the most creative personalities and it is certainly worth taking note of what sets them apart from the rest. In this list, I’ve collected and summarized a few key learnings from the inspiring lives and speeches of the world’s highly creative individuals. Here are their 5 important characteristics:

1. Creative people enjoy the process more than the outcome.

Artists or designers who can take punishing long hours doing something productive while utilizing their imagination are more successful at tapping their creativity. Some tend to ignore working all day at something without the guarantee that it will turn out great. They find joy in getting dirty, working with their hands, and sometimes even doing the repetitive motions involved in the work. They find it therapeutic and worthwhile.

2. Creative people record their ideas through notes or doodles.

Jotting down ideas on a notebook, sketchpad, or any electronic device jogs the mind to generate more tangent thoughts. Doing the simple activity of putting pencil to paper can cement ideas into memory for use at a later time. The mere acts of writing something down or making diagrams are proven to enhance memory, and the greatest artists and thinkers in history are also known to have kept extensive journals to record their thoughts and ideas.

3. Creative people love solving problems they encounter.

Creative types see problems as exciting challenges that may be approached from different angles. Connecting the dots and looking for unique ways of solving an issue are just some of the things creatives look for when dealing with a problem. Some even go as far as setting up and identifying constraints to help them find more interesting perspectives that may be used. In this way, the limitations they set help them make decisions on which directions to take.

4. Creative people don’t mind napping or taking long walks.

In this fast-paced world, it’s harder and harder to find time to rest or relax. Creative types don’t mind taking a short break to reorganize their thoughts or even submit themselves to experiencing chance encounters like eating out with friends or engaging in small talk that could possibly offer a solution to their creative concerns. Not only do these two activities lower stress levels by untangling the mind and offering physical relaxation, they also lead to greater creativity.

5. Creative people are open-minded and look at all points of view.

People who constantly open themselves up to new experiences, ideas, and ways of thinking are generally more successful at coming up with innovative solutions to problems. They do not necessarily believe all perspectives encountered, but by having an open disposition, they do not unnecessarily create barriers that could hinder them from arriving at ideas that come from accidental or spontaneous sources.
